Disney’s Tangled Live-Action Is Back in Motion — Scarlett Johansson in Talks

After a Pause, Disney Moves Forward on Tangled Live-Action Remake with Michael Gracey Directing and Scarlett Johansson Eyed for Villain Role

Disney’s beloved Tangled is stepping back into the spotlight, this time in a new live-action form. The project was paused earlier this year, but now insiders say it’s reviving, and the studio is eyeing big names to bring its world to life.

The new version is in early development with Michael Gracey, known for The Greatest Showman, attached to direct. Disney reportedly paused the remake back in April after its Snow White reboot performed poorly at the box office. But the studio now seems willing to press forward, encouraged by renewed confidence following the success of Lilo & Stitch.

One name generating buzz is Scarlett Johansson, who is in talks to play one of the film’s most iconic antagonists: Mother Gothel. If she signs on, it would mark a notable casting choice for a modern Disney remake, placing a star with decades of box office pull into a character role that’s equal parts dark and complex.

The original Tangled, released in 2010, told the story of Rapunzel — a princess with magical, endlessly long hair — who escapes her tower with the help of the roguish Flynn Rider. The film featured voices by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, and included the Oscar-nominated song “I See the Light.” Its vibrant animation, humor, and heart struck a chord with fans, and it later led to spin-offs like Tangled Ever After and an animated series.

One of the challenges for the remake is honoring what fans loved while giving it fresh energy. Casting Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are still open questions, and how Disney reinterprets the narrative will be key. The original’s blend of adventure, humor, and emotional beats sets a high bar.

Disney’s decision to revive Tangled suggests faith that the remake model can still work — even after stumbles. The Snow White remake, which failed to match audience expectations, had previously caused the studio to pause Tangled’s development. But with Lilo & Stitch proving strong, there’s new momentum.

Johansson’s potential casting adds an intriguing twist. The actress has previously voiced characters in Disney projects and maintains ties with the studio, even amid past legal disputes. Her ability to bring depth and nuance might suit Mother Gothel’s dual role as protective figure and conniving villain.

At the moment, the film is in the early stages of development, and any casting or production timeline remains tentative. Still, seeing Tangled return to life is exciting for fans who grew up with the animated original and are eager to see how Disney reimagines it for a new generation.
